I liked how you pointed out in the article that SEO is a marathon, not a race! So many clients expect immediate results, with SEO that just isn't the case.

Most of them point to black hat companies that guarantee results - though they rarely produce those results, and if they do then you are in trouble, because google will eventually find them out and penalize them or worse black list them.

I tell all my customers this "Are you looking to expand your business successfully over the next few years and build a solid web presence? Or do you want instant gratification. but be out of business in less than a year?"

Very nice article. Its simple to understand. SEO takes a lot of time. You need to work hard and be patient for the results. SEM is also not easy. You need to build good relations. It is then that you will have network of good qualities.

I have been working hard at SEO for all the reasons you've outlined and I am having good results in Yahoo and MSN - I'm on the first page of results for several of my keywords. BUT, I have made absolutely no progress with Google -- it is so frustrating! I can't figure out what I am not doing, I analyze the sites that do come up for keywords and mine seems to be positioned as good as or in some cases better than the ones that are coming up. I just can't crack Google - I am invisible to them - do you have any advice?

Did you mean B2B or B2C? Because I think that a networking site is more B2B, unless it's not business networking and personal networking instead.

I'm glad you posted this. I've started a blog about networking about a month and a half ago and am full-bore into both SMM and SEO. However, I conflated the two as two sides of the same coin, not separate strategies. As I'm more b2c, as you call it, then SMM seems more appropriate to my needs. I find this approach easier to understand and implement as SEO is geared towards optimization towards a sale. Though that is part of the plan, it's not something I'm doing in the short term.

Great clarification.
