You have to give people a reason to link to you. No reason = no link.
Therefore, you need to explore their websites and see how you can help THEIR visitors. Maybe they have a post on the best fruits to grow in your garden and you have a similar or complimentary post. In that case, your chances of getting a link are really high.
It's important that you have good resources on your site that people want to link to. Very few people like linking to commercial sites, but they will be happy to link to a great post you wrote on your blog or some other valuable resource on your site.
Have a terrific website, full of amazing information, and you won't have to ask for links too much; people will just give them to you.
